The rapid growth in energy use by data centers puts them on track to exceed the carbon emissions of worldwide air travel by 2012. There are many promising methods to improve efficiency of data centers. The Stochastic Energy Deployment System (SEDS) model under development by seven national laboratories for the Department of Energy, simulates the U.S. energy system over the next 50 years with explicit consideration of the uncertainties inherent in technology development, fuel prices, market factors, and policy. We will describe its development and immediate use for the evaluation of different technology portfolios of federal energy R&D efforts.

As researchers develop more thorough auditing methods for spreadsheets, they find correspondingly higher error rates. What fraction of errors remain undetected? We find that rewriting spreadsheets into Analytica reveals many otherwise undetected errors. This approach gives rigorous verification of spreadsheets for high-stakes applications.
